Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, begins 5-day teachings at Saranath, Varanasi to more than 30,000 devotees gathered at the Kalachakra Temple on Wednesday.

He will teach "Kamalashila's The Middling Stages of Meditation (Tibetan: Gomrim Barma) and Shantideva's A Guide To the Bodhisattva's Way of Life (Tibetan: Kyod Jug)".

Addressing the Buddhist monks and followers on Wednesday at the Central University of Tibetan Studies, the Dalai Lama said that one could achieve 'bodhi' by removing the sorrow of others and that people should be compassionate towards all.

"Among all living beings, humans have wisdom, hence they should apply their wisdom purposefully and in the right direction," he said.

Besides conferring sermons, Tibetan spiritual leader will preside over a dialogue between Buddhist and non-Buddhist philosophical schools in Varanasi.

The Dalai Lama will also inaugurate the "International Conference on Buddhism and Science" on 16 January.
