CTA Holds Prayer Service for the Latest Self-immolators


The Department of Religion and Culture, Central Tibetan Administration based in Dharamsala, India organized a prayer service today to mourn and express solidarity with the two Tibetans who have self-immolated on March 29 and April 15, 2014.

Dolma, a 31-year-old Tibetan nun from Kham Bathang set herself on fire in protest against the Chinese government’s repressive policies on March 29, 2014.

Over sixteen days later, Thinley Namgyal, 32, died after setting himself on fire in Tawu county of Kardze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.

These two incidents have pushed the total number of known self-immolations inside Tibet to 131, out of which 112 have died.

The self-immolators have called for the return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet and freedom for Tibetans.

The prayer service held today at Dharamsala was presided over by Logon Rinpoche, the abbot of Gyuto monastery.

Local Tibetans including Kalons and officials of the Central Tibetan Administration attended the prayer service.

Lobsang Sangay, head of the Tibetan Administration in Exile, in his address to the masses, expressed the Central Tibetan Administration’s solidarity with the Tibetan self-immolators, and those undergoing political incarceration in Chinese prisons.
