China to Conduct Naval Drills in Yellow Sea

China will hold live-fire naval exercises in the Yellow Sea this week after voicing opposition to similar war games to be staged there by the United States and South Korea.

The Defense Ministry said Sunday the Beihai Fleet will conduct exercises from Wednesday to Saturday.

The United States and South Korea have planned joint maneuvers in the sea early next month, although no dates have been announced.

The Yellow Sea consists mostly of international waters but China regards it as lying within its security perimeter.

The Pentagon says the U.S.-Korean exercises are intended to send a warning to North Korea that Washington is committed to defending its ally.

The United States and South Korea staged massive joint naval and air exercises in the nearby Sea of Japan after the sinking of a South Korean warship in March that killed 46 sailors. Seoul and its allies said the Cheonan was attacked by a North Korean torpedo.
