China Pledges Military Aid to Nepal

China has pledged more than $19 million in military aid to Nepal, in a sign of strengthening ties between the two neighbors.

China's army chief General Chen Bingde met with his Nepalese counterpart, General Chatraman Singh Gurung, during a three-day trip to the Himalayan nation. The two signed agreements under which China will fund equipment and infrastructure for the Nepalese army.

On Thursday, Chen met with Nepal's Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal and Defense Minister Bishnu Paudel in Kathmandu.

The Chinese military chief told reporters his visit was aimed at increasing cooperation between the two nations to bring greater stability to the region.

Chen's visit to Nepal is the first by a high-level Chinese military official in more than a decade.
