Rain Burst Levee in Southern China

About 100,000 people have been evacuated from an area in southern China where a dike was breached by floodwaters for a second time Wednesday.

China's official Xinhua news agency says the dike failed after the Fuhe River in Jiangxi province overflowed its banks. Rescue crews spent much of the night carrying residents to safety in rowboats.

Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao called on rescuers to work hard to control the flood, according to the Jiangxi Provincial Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.

Southern China has been hit by heavy rain for several days. The Ministry of Civil Affairs says 211 people have been killed in floods and 119 are missing. The rain has also triggered landslides that have cut off roads and railways.

Weather forecasters are predicting even more rain in southern China over the next three days. The flooding has caused at least $6 billion in estimated economic damage.
