Dalai Lama's Special Envoy Reacts Chinese Primer's Statement on the Dalai Lama - 2003-11-24

Chinese Premier Jiabao gave a 90-minute interview to Washington Post in Beijing in which he said that the Dalai Lama has not genuinely given up his position of Tibetan independence and has not given up the separatist activities aimed at splitting the motherland.

Wen said that the Chinese leadership has taken note of the recent remarks made by the Dalai Lama but the Chinese leadership still needs to watch very carefully what he really does.

The Dalai Lama has said many times that he is seeking genuine autonomy for Tibet, not independence from China. He also has urged the government in Beijing to respect Tibetans' political and cultural rights.

Dalai Lama's Special Envoy Lodi Gyari and Tsering Sakya(author of "The Dragon in the Land of Snows: A History of Modern Tibet") say that Wen Jiabao has repeated the usual Chinese stand and has not said anything new. His remarks are significant only in the context of his upcoming US visit. Mr. Gyari tells VOA that the US officials plan to raise the question of Tibet with the Chinese Premier during the latter's US visit.
