Earthquake Kills 11 in Bhutan བོད་སྐད།

Local officials in the Himalayan region of Bhutan have raised the death toll to 11 after a powerful earthquake rocked the remote mountain nation Monday.

Bhutan's disaster management officials said three of the victims are Indian nationals who were hit by falling rocks in the eastern district of Samdrup Jongkar. Eight people also died when buildings collapsed in two regions east of the Bhutanese capital, Thimphu.

The 6.3-magnitude earthquake was felt as far away as Dhaka in Bangladesh and Lhasa in Tibet. Buildings cracked in Guwahati, the capital of the northeastern Indian state of Assam.

Bhutan's home minister, Minjur Dorji, confirmed to VOA news that the earthquake destroyed buildings in the country's Monggar region.

He says that some roads have cracked or been blocked, so it could take time for officials to reach remote communities.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake was centered near Bhutan's border with India, about seven kilometers underground, in a remote area some 180 kilometers east of the capital.

The region is considered to be seismically active and last suffered a devastating 8.5-magnitude quake in 1950, blamed on a collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. That event killed more than 1,500 people in Assam.
