Taiwan: China Cancels Events During Dalai Lama Visit བོད་སྐད།

Taiwan's ruling party says China has canceled or postponed several events following Taipei's decision to let Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, visit the island.

Nationalist Party spokeswoman Chen Shu-rong says a senior Communist Party official from Shanghai and a party group from Nanjing have both canceled planned visits to Taiwan.

China refused to allow ceremonies meant to mark the expansion of direct air service between the two sides. Beijing has also said it would not join Saturday's opening ceremony for the Deaf Olympics in Taipei.

Chen says it is not clear if the cancellations were due to the Dalai Lama's visit. But she says the ruling party was stepping up its communication with Beijing to lessen any possible impact.

The Dalai Lama arrived in Taiwan Sunday on a visit to comfort victims of Typhoon Morakot, which lashed the island last month, leaving more than 700 people dead or missing.

On Tuesday, the Dalai Lama held a prayer ceremony in front of thousands of people at a sports stadium where he once again praised Taiwan's democracy.
