Maoists Protest After PM Quits བོད་སྐད།

Thousands of protesters are rallying in Nepal's capital a day after Maoist Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal resigned in a dispute with the president.

At least 3,000 protesters marched through Kathmandu Tuesday demanding President Ram Baran Yadav step down. Communist lawmakers also disrupted parliament Tuesday.

The communists are demanding the dismissal of Nepal's army chief who refused to integrate former Maoist rebels in the military.

Mr. Dahal, the former Maoist rebel leader known as Prachanda, resigned and pulled his party out of the government Monday after the president overruled his decision to dismiss the army chief.

The Communist Party of Nepal Maoist has the most seats in parliament, but does not have a majority to govern alone.

Other political parties held emergency talks Tuesday to try to form a coalition government without the Maoists.

The collapse of the Maoists' administration could threaten a 2006 peace deal that ended a decade of civil war between the Maoists and the government.

The war killed more than 13,000 people. The rebels abandoned their fight in exchange for a role in the government and an end to Nepal's constitutional monarchy.

The Maoists now want their former fighters to join the military. But the army chief, General Rookmangud Katawal, has refused to accept them because he considers them "politically indoctrinated."

President Yadav said the prime minister's decision to dismiss the general was unconstitutional because the army is under the Nepal president's command.
