Sentencing Delay for Tibetan Lama Arrested in Anti-Government Protests བོད་སྐད།

A lawyer for a Tibetan lama arrested during last year's wave of anti-government protests says a Chinese court has postponed its judgment date for the religious leader.

Attorney Li Fangping told The London Times Monday that the verdict for Phurbu Tsering Rinpoche has been deferred. He said he was told by a court official that there is no new date yet.

Officials at the court in Kardze (Chinese: Ganzi) prefecture originally planned to announce their decision Tuesday.

Lawyers for the religious leader say he could face up to 15 years in prison on charges of illegal possession of firearms and explosives, as well as embezzlement. The lama denies all charges and says he signed a confession only under police duress.

Phurbu Tsering Rinpoche headed a Buddhist nunnery. That nunnery was involved in demonstrations against the Chinese government's so-called "patriotic education" campaign in religious institutions.
