Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with Swiss President Hans-Rudolf Merz in Bern Tuesday, his first stop on what Beijing calls Mr. Wen's "journey of confidence" across Europe.

Swiss authorities restricted media access to the Federal Palace and police briefly detained 21 Tibetan protesters.

Little information about the talks between the Chinese and Swiss leader has been released.

But officials from both countries say the meeting focused on economic relations and China's role in solving the global financial crisis.

Mr. Wen also plans to address the World Economic Forum, which starts Wednesday in Davos. He is later scheduled to visit Germany, Spain, Britain, and European Union headquarters in Brussels.
