Chinese Expert Says Building Boom May Have Led to Weak Schools བོད་སྐད།

The head of a Chinese panel of experts investigating the country's massive Sichuan earthquake says a rush to build schools in recent years may be why so many of them collapsed.

Speaking at a press conference Thursday in Beijing, Ma Zongjin noted that a lot of schools were built in recent years and that some may have had substandard construction.

Sichuan's May 12th earthquake killed nearly 70-thousand people. The government says around seven-thousand schools collapsed, killing thousands of students and teachers.

The collapse of so many schools sparked an uproar from parents. Authorities have yet to say just how many children died during the quake.
