French Lawmakers to Meet with Dalai Lama བོད་སྐད།

A French lawmaker says members of France's parliament will meet next month with the Dalai Lama as the Olympic Games are underway in Beijing.

Senator Louis de Broissia said Tuesday that the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader will meet on August 13th with members of a French parliamentary group on Tibet.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has not announced whether he will meet with the Dalai Lama during the Nobel laureate's visit to France.

But Mr. Sarkozy has rejected warnings from China against meeting the Dalai Lama, saying it is not up to China to set his agenda.

On Monday, members of the Tibetan-parliament-in-exile issued an appeal to Mr. Sarkozy and other heads of state attending the Beijing Olympics. The Indian-based parliament called on world leaders at next week's opening ceremony of the Beijing Games to press China on the Tibet issue.

The head of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Poettering, said he would not attend the opening ceremony, citing a lack of progress in China's talks with representatives of the Dalai Lama.

The Dalai Lama says he supports China hosting the Summer Olympics, but China accuses him of undermining the Games.
