Dalai Lama Begins Buddhist Holy Month With Prayers for Earthquak Victims བོད་སྐད།

Exiled Tibetans gathered in Dharmsala, the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile, on Wednesday to take part in a special prayer session for people affected by the recent earthquake in China.

The hour-long prayers were led by the exiled spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists, the Dalai Lama.

Parliamentarians of the Indian-based Tibetan government-in-exile also participated in the prayer session.

The prayers, to be held simultaneously in various refugee settlements throughout India, were organised by the exiled-Tibetan government.

"Through this grand prayer ceremony, the Kashag (cabinet) prays for all the quake victims, including those who died in the recent earthquake and their families, as well as for the speedy recovery of all those injured during the disaster," read a statement issued by the Tibetan Cabinet-in-exile.

The prayers were held on the first day of the Tibetan holy month of Saga-Dawa during which prayers are believed to bring extra merit.

The Tibetan government-in-exile had asked for a temporary halt to protests against Chinese rule over the territory as China grappled with the aftermath of an earthquake that killed more than 69-thousand and left millions more homeless.
