South Korea Confirms H5N1 Bird Flu Outbreak

South Korean officials have confirmed that an outbreak of bird flu in the country's southwest was caused by the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus.

Health and agriculture officials said test results showed Saturday that H5N1 was present at a farm in Iksan, where some 6,000 chickens died this week.

The H5N1 strain has killed more than 150 people worldwide. No one has died in South Korea.

On Friday, Japan suspended poultry imports from South Korea and said Japanese authorities will require people arriving from South Korea to disinfect their shoes when entering Japan.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
