Press Freedom Group Demands China Investigate Assault on Activist

A media rights organization is calling on Chinese authorities to investigate the case of an activist who was beaten after he criticized the government.

Reporters Without Borders says Fu Xiancai was struck on the neck and paralyzed by an unknown group of assailants in central China in early June, two weeks after a interview with him was aired on German television. In the interview, he had criticized the Chinese government for not providing proper compensation to people displaced by the construction of the Three Gorges Dam -- the world's largest hydroelectric power project.

The group said China's foreign ministry is responsible for organizing and regulating the work of foreign journalists in Chinese territory, and they are responsible for ensuring the safety of people who choose to speak with the media.
