Tutu Urges China to Grant Tibet Autonomy

South Africa's retired archbishop Desmond Tutu has called on China to grant Tibet autonomy.

The Nobel laureate spoke at a ceremony in Belgium Thursday, where he was given an award by the International Campaign for Tibet for his work promoting awareness of Tibetan issues. Tutu urged China, in his words, to "become a superpower of morality" and "do the right thing" by granting Tibet autonomy.

Tibet has been under Chinese control since 1950.

Exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama presented the "Light of Truth" award to the Tutu. Tutu won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his peaceful opposition to South African apartheid legal segregation of blacks and whites.
