Grenade Blast in Indian Kashmir Injures 18

Police in Indian Kashmir say 18 people were injured when a grenade thrown by suspected Islamic militants exploded in a crowded market.

The blast occurred Thursday in the town of Pulwama, south of Srinagar, Indian Kashmir's summer capital.

Police officials said the grenade was thrown at a paramilitary truck, but missed and exploded in a group of pedestrians.

The attack was the third in the region in a week. Earlier this week, two other explosions in Doda district killed two people and wounded at least 30 more.

Muslim separatists have been fighting for Kashmir's independence or its merger with neighboring Pakistan since 1989. The violence has claimed tens of thousands of lives.
