Police Detain at Least 4 in Connection with Bombings

Indian authorities have detained at least four men for questioning in connection with Tuesday's bombings in the town of Varanasi that left 20 people dead.

Officials said two of the detained men resemble the sketches of suspects issued earlier by police. The sketches were drawn from the statements of witnesses who claim to have seen the men at a market planting a bomb that failed to detonate and was later defused by police.

The suspects were rounded up after a raid at a guesthouse in Hardoi, about 80 kilometers from the Uttar Pradesh state capital of Lucknow.

A little known Kashmiri separatist group, Lashkar-e-Kahar, claimed responsibility for the bombings, but police dismissed the claim. Police say they suspect one of the two main Pakistan-based Kashmiri militant groups - Jaish-e-Mohammed or Lashkar-e-Taiba - was involved.
