Nepal Searches for Missing French, Nepalese Climbers

Nepalese rescuers are searching for seven French mountaineers and their Nepalese porters and guides who disappeared four days ago while trying to climb Mount Kangru in the northwestern part of the country.

Authorities in Kathmandu lost contact with the group after a heavy snowfall hit the Himalayas late Wednesday.

But a break in the weather Sunday enabled the authorities to send a helicopter to the nearly seven thousand (6,981) meter high mountain. Three Nepalese climbers were rescued but the rest remain missing.

Nepal is home to eight of the world's tallest 14 peaks, including the highest, Mount Everest.
