China Moves to Demolish Half of World’s Largest Tibetan Buddhist Academy

China has ordered the removal of more than 5,000 Buddhist practitioners and students from Larung Gar Buddhist Institute and destroy their personal residences.

The school is situated in Gharze Tibetan Prefecture, located today in China’s Sichuan Province. Official Chinese documents further state that “ideological guidance” needed to be increased at the religious community, and that the institute will be forced to accept joint management with government officials.

This latest crackdown on religious study and practice is expected to deeply hurt the feelings of millions of Tibetans across Tibet, most of whom remember the mass demolition of thousands of residencies at the same institute in 2001.

The expulsion and demolition campaign is expected to be completed by October 31, 2016.
