Dalai Lama is Hopeful on Tibet

The Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama said in an interview with Reuters that it was too early to tell if China's next president - who is almost certain to be Xi Jinping after a Communist Party Congress later this year - would adopt a new stance that could break decades of deadlock over Tibet. But he was reassured by what he had heard.

Despite the current tense situation in Tibet, the Dalai Lama stated that he is hopeful for the future of Tibet.

According to some Chinese intellectuals who met with the Dalai Lama recently, he welcomed their view that the upcoming new set of Chinese leaders may be more moderate in their policies on Tibet.

The Dalai Lama expressed the view that “these are very, very encouraging signs.” However he acknowledged the fact that it was too early to make any judgments as the set up and mechanism of the Chinese government is unpredictable.
